Default "Error pages" settings for subdomains do not work

Hi all,
I have set up a subdomain for my site, and have set the customized error pages for both the top level domain and the subdomain, such as the 404.shtml.
However, it seems that only the 404.shtml for the top level domain works, but accessing a non-exist page within the subdomain will still receive the defauld 404 page.
Would you please check that?
Thanks a lot

what is your domain name? Also, please make sure to provide the subdomain where the 404 error pages are not working.

Thanks for your reply,

The top level domain is : aulddays.com
subdomain is: live.aulddays.com
You may have a test: http://aulddays.com/haha

I tested it and they are working fine -

http://live.aulddays.com/topdomain.html

http://aulddays.com/error.htmlk

Both url's are showing different 404 page.

Thanks for your patience.

Well, as I tested that again, the error page DID work in Firefox (I did not test that last time), but in IE it was still showing:
The webpage cannot be found
HTTP 404
Most likely causes:
There might be a typing error in the address.
If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date...

I tested again in IE on another machine with different OS and IE version, it still did not work.
Then I watched the exact reply with telnet, it seems that live.aulddays.com returns just the right error page. But it is strange that IE could not show it properly.

Did you test that in IE for Firefox?

I get following responses in IE -

/error.htmlk http://www.profusehost.net/forum/fre...-not-work.html ("Error pages" settings for subdomains do not work) aulddays.com Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022)

Hi again,

I think I identified the problem.

I did this: delete the 404.shtml in the top level domain, and create a new one within the cPanel: select some tags to insert into it and save. Open it again, it seems that the cPanel has automatically appended a peice of comment (<!--...-->) in the file, in which there is a lot of whitespace characters.
And then do the same for subdomain, there is no such comment appended. I tried to copy this comment with spaces into the 404.shtml of the subdomain, and then it works for my IE!
You may see the difference by watching the 404_fail.shtml and 404_ok.shtml in the "live" directory.

I guess that that is a bug for IE and that cPanel had some workaround of it (by adding a lot of whitespaces), but forgot to do this for subdomain...

Thanks a lot for your help
