AJAX on phpbb forum

Is this a good idea to use? I can do all the coding myself, but what would the projected difficulty be to add AJAX technology to phpbb for features like a shoutbox, quick reply, quick edit, PM/Post notify etc.

Benefits
- Immediate updates notification without page reload

Cons
- May not work in all browsers

AJAX in general is a wonderful technology, cause of the low reload times and fast, interactive use. But I am not sure about the copyright, if you are allowed to change the phpBB code.

If there is no copyright issue, I would recommend to try it and would be very pleased if you publish your experiences here in the forum or maybe write a tutorial how you did it and what is important to know about.
