Default Tips on dual booting WindowsXP and Ubuntu?

I'm fairly tech savvy, and I really want to set up my WindowsXP computer to dual boot with Ubuntu. Any tips on how to get this to work?

i sure would like to know if there is a easy way for this. I did run ubuntu on my computer but i was using a cd for it. I am sure if i run it from HD, it will run like crazy. I am just scared to mess up boot sector information.

I am using ubuntu 6.06 along with Windows XP. I don't understand what you mean by tips on dual booting. There are two ways of istalling.

1) Installing Ubuntu after XP
2) Installing XP after Ubuntu

In the first option, it itself creates the boot menu for both XP and Ubuntu. You can modify the menu by editing the file menu.lst present in the grub folder in the filesystem. It provides good documentation in it itself.

But if you opt the 2nd option, it won't work automatically. After installing XP, you won't get the boot option menu. So, after installing Ubuntu, you have to create a boot floopy and has to reinstall the GRUB.
Now I am on vacation. I will give details on reinstalling GRUB later. If anyone know it please post it here...

Hi,The easiest way is to use Wubi. (1st link)This will install & uninstall Ubuntu like a program.Doing it this way will not mess with your MBR.It will add C:\grldr and as well Ubuntu to your boot.ini and at boot you select XP or Ubuntu.Using Restart as well will make it even easier. (2nd link)Have fun.
