Which version of Ubuntu did you tried? If it was 6.06LTS or above, was you able to boot correctly from the live CD? Your board is 845GV chipset and mine too but assembled and Ubuntu 6.06LTS works fine.

If you want some other distros, try Redhat, Fedora or Mandrake. They have a huge number of applications bundled with it. If you stick to debian, I think Mepis will do(I have not used it yet). SUSE and Linspire can be used if you want a windows like appearance. They have a desktop similar to windows, but you need to pay for buying a new CD. They are not shipped for free like Ubuntu. I am not sure whether these distro's support your system but sure it supports the 845GV chipset boards...

OpenSUSE would probably be your second best choice; if that don't work theres Fedora, PCLinuxOS, and Debian. Heres a pretty heafty site for you to check out.... http://distrowatch.com

All linux distros can be downloaded off the net as .iso files which can be burnt straight onto a cd or dvd. If you boot up from a live cd you can then install them from within the live version of the linux distro.

Watch out distrowatch (see above), or just try FreeBSD, that is no Linux for sure, but it is UNIX, so it is even better If you need a GUI try DesktopBSD or install a GUI on your own.
