There are several free ones that you can host yourself: phpbb.com http://www.simplemachines.org To name a few. If you want to use the second one, look at this for fast installation: http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=941.0

There are several forum softwares.I list them here. Free forum softwares are - Phpbb - The forum is very uncustomizeable and the admin cp looks very bad. Smf - Don't know much about it. Forum softwares that cost are - Invision Power Board(IPB) - is highly customizeable. You can add almost any modification to it that you want. There are many sites that will give you in finding the correct mod and helping you install it or making a mod for you. There are a whole lot of Administrator abilities to it and will take a while to figure out what some of them do. vBulletin - It is very easy to navigate through the board. If u wan't a free forum software i recommend using Smf cause i have heard many good things from people about it.

depends on what your doing. SMF doesnt have the community of MODs behind them like phpBB does but SMF is more advanced when you first install them. Depends really on how long your going to spend making the forum
