Default harddrive space

my hard drive is running out of space. is there anyway i can figure out whats taking up most of my space. i have a 40gb hard drive but im all filled up. my musics are about 20gb in my hard drive. 18gb to be exact.. and all my other stuff combined together is like 4gb. that makes 22gb of files i got in my hard drive. but when i click my hard drive. it says i only have like 500mb left. whats the deal with that. does anyone know whats the probleM? is there any way i can try to free more space and find my other approximately 10gb space?

Do you have an OS isntalled on that drive? (kinda stupid question, i know but..)

You can go to the file explorer and select all the folders and files that you have in there, then left click it > properties and check if the number are correct.

Did you have any problem in the recent times with the drive? like bad sectors etc?

I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager couple months ago, i thing it tells you what folders/files are using you disk space in a graph.

You can also use the following softwares and see if they help recover some space on your HD -

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Also, you can recover some space on your hard drive by turning off system restore -

Start > control panel> system > system restore > turn off system restore.

On my computer, I have 8 Gb dedicated to system restore alone. So check that on your computer

Also, run start > accessories > system tools > disk cleanup

check all options and see if that helps.

Well why don't you tell the rest of us how the problem was solved? I could use some more knowledge on this subject myself. Was your problem solved as a direct result of one of the posts above?

In XP restore points are saved and lot of space is taken for this purpose and the recycle bin also takes a lot of space. When you reinstall OS this files stays there and no information for system to work is in this files and they stays as junk and stays there for long.
