I've got the paid version of it. Don't know if it's actually any different from housecall.. Their site is very helpfull though. It does sometimes say some file is a virus that actually just is a game trainer (little cheat hacks), but I guess other programs have that too.

I think Norton is the best virus protection software out there. Try googling the virus there should be something about it? Good luck with it though, I hope your computer doesn't crash or anything like that!!

Norton is actually famous for being a huge but mediocre brand virus scanner.
I've never used it, but kapersky is suppossed to be superb. Might get that for my new PC. It's pretty expensive too. 70 EUR a year or something like that if I'm not mistaken.

i use Mcafee & i think its the best because of the features & also the antivirus start up speed so fast.

Norton takes a day to load on PCs with less than 512 ram.

McAfee also tries to clean the file during execution but norton will delete it from HDD & make the program impossible to run.

I think McAfee is the BEST!!!!!

I found an alternative solution for removing viruses... May be some may feel it weired; but it really works. Most of the new viruses makes themselves as system files and prevent antivirus programs from removing and what antivirus programs could do is to point the infected file. So, install any Linux distro along with the Windows(Also known as dual booting). If a virus is affected in your system and you exactly know the path; you could login in linux and delete the file. This technique really helped me many times.

If you really want to stick with the windows; but needs an option to recover valuable data after virus attacks; the above option works fine. For others, its time to look for what Linux has got for you.... and be free from viruses and save your money.....

Try avg for free for home and personal use. It detects more viruses than Norton and is a great piece of software. I would recommend it to anyone and I use it on all my home pc's.

@spsse

i think mcFee really uses a lot of system resources, i really dont know why..

currently i'm using kaspersky internet security 7 and it really helps me especially when my built-in firewall is disabled. easy to manage and effective

I used Norton's for years, and about a year ago switched to Kapersky. Maybe its just because my PC is old and slow, but it seemed to make everything run a lot slower. I'm currently without virus protection (Kapersky expired) but I'm careful and I'm building a new PC anyway that will definitely have it.

Any other personal recommendations? I've tried AVG before and didn't like it. Norton may not be rated the highest, but it just "works" and I'd prefer something similar.

The best is AVG 8 Internet Security!!
It has:
* Anti-Virus: protection against viruses, worms and trojans
* Anti-Spyware: protection against spyware, adware and identity-theft
* Anti-Rootkit: protection against hidden threats (rootkits)
* Anti-Spam: filters out unwanted and fraudulent e-mails (anti-phishing)
* Web Shield & LinkScanner: protection against malicious websites
* Firewall: protection against hackers
* System Tools: for easy system management

AVG's award-winning antivirus technology protects millions of users and is certified by major antivirus testing organizations (VB100%, ICSA, West Coast Labs Checkmark).

im currently using the new version of Nod32 anti-virus 64bit Business edition, it works fine and smooth on my 64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium and it really scratches and removes viruses and spy wares.

I'm using Norton 08 and I don't think it can be beaten. I've never had a virus yet, although I suppose the user is the strongest/weakest link in the protection web.

I am using Clamwin along with Antivir PE Classic. Clamwin has got a good scan engine, but lacks realtime scanning. Along with antivir, it works well, without any problems. I have been using this for more than a year and there wasn't even a single virus problem that bothered me.

Also, these two are free to use.

Got Kaspersky since May now. Version 7. something.
I'll get 9 next year. Very happy with it. Doesn't slow the system down at all (well, can't notice it..) and just quitely runs in the background, not giving me al kinds of bullshit, only warning me when it detects something. And the add-blocker is pretty handy too.
